In order to derive health based Reference Values from the results of toxicological studies,
assessment factors - also termed safety or uncertainty factors - are applied to a relevant starting point (orpoint of departure) which can be a NOAEL1
or a BMDL52observed in the particular study. At the
Workshop on Risk Assessment of Manufactured Nanomaterials in a Regulatory Context (16-18thSeptember, 2009) in Washington D.C., United States of America, it was concluded, following discussion,that the application of standard uncertainty factors applied in the assessment of chemicals to the riskassessment of nanomaterials should undergo validation and that a justification should be provided whenusing uncertainty factors currently not validated for nanomaterials (ENV/JM/MONO(2010)10).
